So, How Long Does an Oil Change Take?

An oil change should take between 15 and 45 minutes. You can typically get oil changes done at repair service centers, quick lube shops (shops that focus almost solely on oil changes), or even do it yourself.

Why Do I Need an Oil Change?

Oil helps reduce wear and tear on your engine. It acts as a lubricant for different engine parts, allowing them to move easily and without friction. It even cools your engine parts!

As you drive, your oil picks up small particles and dirt. After a while, typically every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, your oil gets dirty enough that it needs to be changed. Changing the oil removes any of the dirt and particles that circulate with the oil.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

Not sure if you need an oil change? Look out for these five signs.

  • “Change oil” light on your dashboard—This light will go on when your vehicle senses it is time to get its oil changed.
  • Knocking or grinding noises in your engine—If you’re low on oil, you may hear knocking or grinding noises when driving because your engine parts don’t have enough oil to lubricate them.
  • A burning smell—If your oil is low or dirty, it will struggle to keep your engine cool. If your engine gets hot enough, you will be able to smell it.
  • Your oil consistency has changed—If you check your oil and it comes out dark, thick, or grimy, it means that your oil is dirty.
  • Low oil levels—You can check your oil using your car’s oil dipstick. If it is below the level indicated, then you need more oil!

One additional way to tell if you need an oil change is the sticker in your vehicle’s window from your last oil change. Your service technician will give you a date or mileage estimate when you need to get your oil changed again.

Different Oil Types For Oil Changes

There are four types of oil used in oil changes. You can find out the type of oil best for your vehicle in your vehicle manufacture’s guide.

The first type is conventional oil. This oil is common in older engines. They are not expected to work for long in high-performance engines. It is often less expensive but requires more frequent oil changes.

The second type of oil is semi-synthetic oil. This is a blend of conventional and synthetic oil. It is a little cheaper than synthetic or high-mileage oil.

Another type of oil is synthetic oil. This oil is chemically engineered to flow better and resist breaking down in high temperatures. It is often used in luxury cars and other high-performance models.

The final oil type is high-mileage oil. This oil is made for engines that have 75,000 miles or more on their odometers. This type of oil has additives that help stop problems like oil leaks and higher oil use.
