4Runner Warning Lights

Your 4Runner uses the dashboard lights as a way of keeping you aware. Some of these lights turn on whenever the vehicle detects a problem with a certain part or system. Here are some common warning lights you may see on the dashboard of your Toyota 4Runner:

  • Brake System Warning Light: If you have low brake fluid or a malfunction in the braking system, the word BRAKE will show up on the dashboard.
  • High Coolant Temperature Warning Light: This light, which looks like a thermometer placed in liquid, indicates the engine coolant temperature is too high. It is best to immediately stop the vehicle when you see this.
  • Charging System Warning Light: This icon looks just like a car battery and is a warning that there is a problem with the charging system. This could mean it is time for a new battery or alternator.
  • Slip Indicator: When you see what looks like a car driving down a curvy road, there might be a problem with the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, Trailer Sway Control System, or another safety system in your 4Runner.
  • Rear Differential Lock Indicator Light: This dashboard light is represented by a picture of a car frame with an X over the rear axle. You will see this if your 4Runner is equipped with the rear differential lock and there is a malfunction with the system.

Whenever a warning light appears on the dashboard, you will want to have your Toyota 4Runner serviced as soon as possible. That way, you can get the issue resolved quickly before any additional damage happens.

Indicator Lights

Other lights you might see on your dashboard are indicator lights. These lights simply keep you aware of which systems are engaged at that moment. This includes commonly known lights like your turn signal indicator and headlight high beam indicator.

The parking brake indicator, which will display the word PARK on your dashboard, is letting you know it is currently engaged. There is also a cruise control indicator, which looks like a speedometer, that lets you know you can go ahead and set the speed you’d like the system to maintain.
