Toyota Tacoma Dashboard Lights

The Toyota Tacoma is one tough pickup. It’s prepared to deal with difficult driving conditions or go off-roading. Keeping it in good condition is the best way to make sure it can get up and over whatever lies in your path. To help drivers around Houston, Sugarland, and Pearland, TX, take better care of their trucks, Mike Calvert Toyota takes a closer look at the Toyota Tacoma dashboard lights. Dashboard Lights

Indicator Lights

Some of the lights on your dashboard are just there to remind you that a feature or function has been turned on. You’re probably familiar with a few of the most common indicator lights:

  • Parking Brake – When your parking brake is on, you’ll see the word PARK in all caps.
  • Cruise Control – Cruise control is a great way to conserve gas on long drives. Since it maintains a constant speed, its indicator light looks like your speedometer.
  • Crawl Control – If you’re driving on steep terrain, you might see a light that looks like your truck driving up a bumpy hill.

Warning Lights

Unlike indicator lights, warning lights aren’t controlled by the driver. They only come on when your Toyota Tacoma needs maintenance or if there’s been a malfunction. While some of them are helpful reminders, others are more serious and may require a tow truck. Some of the warning lights you should be aware of include:

  • Malfunction Indicator – Even though it’s called an indicator light, this dashboard light is usually known by another name, the check engine light. It looks like your engine and can be triggered by a few different issues under the hood. Usually it’s a sign there’s something off with the vehicle’s emissions system. While you won’t need to pull over, you should schedule service as soon as possible.
  • ABS Warning – If the letters ABS appear on your dashboard, it means your anti-lock braking system has malfunctioned. You can still drive with your regular brakes, but get this fixed soon, so you can continue to stop safely.
  • Low Engine Oil – When you’re overdue for an oil change, you’ll see a light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can. Think of this as a reminder your truck needs routine maintenance.
  • High Engine Coolant Temperature – When you’re low on coolant and the engine temperature begins to rise, you’ll see a dashboard light that looks like a thermometer. Pull over and turn off the engine of your Toyota Tacoma. Once it cools down you can add more coolant or drive straight to the service center.
  • Charging System Warning – If your battery is low or you have a problem with your alternator, you’ll see a light that looks like your car battery. Your best bet is to call for a tow truck or drive straight to the service center. If you pull over and turn off the engine, it might have a hard time starting up again.
  • Brake System Warning – The word BRAKE should go away when you disengage the parking brake. If it doesn’t, or if it comes on while you’re driving, it means there’s a problem with your brake system. Pull over and call for a tow truck immediately. It’s not safe to drive with faulty brakes.
